Scootering began with the “Scooter Craze” in 1999-2001. This is when the Razor scooter was at its high point. It was first

targeted towards 8-12 year olds. The some found the freestyle side of scootering and began to learn and invent tricks. One

of the major scooter breakthroughs was when Razor, the biggest American scooter company, took the best riders from

California and made a team in 2001. The Core Tour scooter competitions that same year also gather much publicity.

With the years to come scootering became less popular with children. Instead the sport of scootering progressed. 2005 was

started the beginning of serious competitive riding. Many skateparks organized competitions during 2005, including: The

Incline Club in Lakewood, NJ, Skatebarn West in Renton, WA, and ASSIR Empire Skate Building in Montreux.

Park riding is the most common form of scooter riding. Kick

scooters are able to handle basically any of the structures a

skatepark contains dues to their construction. This includes

funboxes, rails, and boxjumps. Skateparks are useful to learn new

tricks, practice for competions, and to hang out with other riders.

Some riders enjoy performing ‘flyout’ tricks and push their trick

level and others enjoy a ‘flowy’ style, replicating the way BMX

riders use the park. Park riding is popular with riders from

California and the East Coast, due to all of the skateparks

available there. Some street riders also use the parks to learn

tricks there and then take them out into the streets.

Street riding is another popular style, mostly used by inner city

riders. Street riders look for stairs, ledges, hubbas, handrails and

gaps of all kinds to create a challenging riding environment. A part

to being a good street rider is being able to use your surroundings

to push yourself to the limit. Only some riders focus strictly on

riding street. This may be due to the lack of skatepark access.

Most scooter riders are not used to different environments.
